The subtitle ‘Another Testament of Jesus Christ’ was added in 1982. In General Conference 1986 President Ezra Taft Benson explained that it was added to aid in focusing the efforts of the church to more fully utilize the Book of Mormon in general, and specifically to utilize it in testifying of Christ.
Notes
Hi, Mike. I was trying to find the original source for the statement above, but have been unable to do so. I checked President Benson’s talks in both the April and the October 1986 General Conference sessions. The closest that I could come up with was this statement from, “The Book of Mormon—Keystone of Our Religion,” saying: “It is indeed another testament or witness of Jesus. This is one of the reasons why we have recently added the words “Another Testament of Jesus Christ” to the title of the Book of Mormon.” Can you please direct me to the source for the statement above? Many thanks!
I just pulled the date 1982 from the Mormon Newsroom website. It says the following: “o help clarify and emphasize the purpose of the Book of Mormon, a subtitle was added in 1982. The full title reads, The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ.” See: https://www.mormonnewsroom.org/article/book-of-mormon
