This can be called a “student revelation”
Not everything you are taught is of God… some things are true, some things are of men.
This revelation not only applies to Joseph Smith translating the Apocrypha, but can also apply to our students with regards to music, or anything else that they are into. What should I read every book with? The Spirit. The Spirit will tell me what is correct and help me to decipher between truth and error.
When you were a child, did you ever drag a magnet through a sandbox? The magnet will pull iron filings out of the sand, because likes cling to likes… intelligence cleaveth to intelligence.
These iron filings represent all the good things that the Lord wants us to cling to in our lives. Pour the sand on the iron filings- Satan wants us to miss the truth in our lives. Now the sand hides the filings…
What has the Lord given me to decipher truth from error? The Holy Ghost – he is very much like this magnet, by using the magnet you can pull truths into your life and discern between truth and error.
15 For behold, my brethren, it is given unto you to judge, that ye may know good from evil; and the way to judge is as plain, that ye may know with a perfect knowledge, as the daylight is from the dark night. 16 For behold, the Spirit of Christ is given to every man, that he may know good from evil; wherefore, I show unto you the way to judge; for every thing which inviteth to do good, and to persuade to believe in Christ, is sent forth by the power and gift of Christ; wherefore ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of God. 17 But whatsoever thing persuadeth men to do evil, and believe not in Christ, and deny him, and serve not God, then ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of the devil; for after this manner doth the devil work, for he persuadeth no man to do good, no, not one; neither do his angels; neither do they who subject themselves unto him. (Moroni 7:16-17.)
